Runaway Train was founded in Chicago, in the winter of 2013, by Zoe Lubeck and Alex Thompson.

It was designed to offer a collective home for independent collaborators interested in low-to-mid budget film and serial production and development. Since its creation, it has produced feature films, series pilots, short films and commercials.

“...this is a different world that begs a different kind of art-making.”

Thompson
- a director, writer and producer - was listed on New City's Film 50 list of "Chicago's Screen Gems" in 2016. A Kentucky native, he grew up watching Humphrey Bogart films with his Popou and making movies with the Feeses under the name Flying Banana Studios, back when Coltneck Lane was still a cul de sac. He has a BA from DePauw University and an MFA in directing from DePaul University.

Lubeck is a queer interdisciplinary filmmaker working as a director, cinematographer, performance artist, and experimental filmmaker. Her short film Lucy premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival where it took the Audience Choice Award in the Reels Shorts Competition. Additionally it won the special jury prize at the 2015 Student BAFTA awards.
